Kuipplant met grijze bast en leerachtig, glanzend blad. Mannelijke bloemen zijn geel; vrouwelijke rood en puntig. Het fruit is paars/zwart en eetbaar.

Zaai-instructies : Zaai de zaden op ongeveer 1 cm diepte in goed doorlatende grond. Houd de grond warm en vochtig tot ontkieming (na 3 tot 6 weken).

Plant-instructies : Licht maar niet in volle zon. Grond niet laten uitdrogen.

Shrub or small tree. Leaves alternate, oblong to elliptic, leathery; veins sunken above, prominent below with hairs on the veins on both surfaces. Flowers in long catkin-like spikes, up to 8 cm; sexes on separate trees, male flowers yellow, female flowers reddish, unpleasantly scented. The flowers are often parasitised by insects to form a tangled mass of sterile galls. Fruits in pendulous spikes of small fleshy berries, red to purple-black when ripe, edible.

Sowing instructions : Sow about 1 cm. deep in well drained soil. Keep soil moist and warm until germination (in 3-6 weeks).

Planting instructions : Lots of light but no full sun. Soil must not dry out.
