Description: A native of Central America and widely cultivated in Jamaica is this small, highly aromatic, tropical tree. With shiny, dark green leaves with a spicy smell and taste, it bears sprays of small, very pretty white flowers followed by small, black, pea-sized berries. These, when dried, are the source of allspice, so called because of its supposed combination of cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg aromas and flavours.

Sowing instructions: Prior to sowing soak seed for 24 hours in warm water. Sow 1 seed per small pot, 4mm deep into moist, well-drained seed compost which is mixed with perlite or coarse sand. Firm the soil. Ideal temp. 20-25 Celsius. Bottom heat is said to be beneficial. Germination takes 1-2 months approx.
