Bloeit met dikke bloei-aren van mannelijke en vrouwelijke bloemen; de laatste groeien uit tot ronde, stekelige bolletjes met de prachtige zaden. Planten binnen overwinteren of als eenjarige behandelen. De dikke bloei-aren en vruchtjes zijn rood of groen van kleur. Hoogte: 150 cm.
