Uit een rozet van grijsgroene, geruwde bladeren ontspringen lange stengels met zijtakjes. Overvol zacht hemelsblauwe bloemen. Bijen, vlinders en hommels komen er graag op af. De naam dankt de plant aan zijn ruwe zaden.
