Klimplanten kunnen niet zonder steun. Je kunt ze tegen een schutting, wigwam of tonkinstokken laten groeien. Minstens zo leuk is het om ze door bomen en heesters te laten groeien zodat deze interessanter worden, zeker als ze niet in bloei zijn. Om te klimmen gebruiken deze planten allerlei hulpmiddelen: klimranken, doorns of zuigwortels. Andere slingeren zich in hun geheel om hun steun heen.
